Phase 1 and 2
  1. Industrialization in Europe
  2. Europe produced a demand for foodstuffs, and raw materials.
  3. Cuba’s economy became weak under the mercantilist policies of Spanish colonization
  4. Then, reforms of Charles III provided the stimuli that led to growth.

  2. Import- machines, textiles, luxury items, and other finished products
  3. Export- coffee, tobacco, and sugar
  4. Thus stimulating growth in the raw material sector of labor in Cuba
  5. Economic and social transitions
  6. Sugar boom
  7. Concentration of ownership(primarily with American investors)
  8. Latter controlled by more than 10 percent of all land in Cuba
  9. Transitions lead to political change
  10. Elite Quest for Political Authority
  11. Jose Marti, revolutionary poet-lawyer
  12. Organized a revolt for independence which lasted 3 years
  13. Tomas Estrada Palma
  14. Cuba’s first president: favored annexation and won second term by electoral fraud.
  15. This led to the imposition of dictatorial strongmen to assert law and order.

  1. Increase in population in Latin America encouraged immigration in order to sustain expansion.
  2. There were no immigrants due to importation of slaves from Africa many years before
  3. ¼ of Cubans lived in large scale cities

  1. Technological Improvements
  2. Cultivation came to require a large-scale work force for harvesting cane
  3. During dead season workers had nowhere to go
  4. Result: Rural laborers had intimate contact with working class in cities
  5. This communication eventually has a decisive effect on the course of the country’s history because it permitted a unified class wide social movement
  6. (leads to political issues after 1920)
